The other day I decided to sacrifice my Math Quiz Section in favor of three hours of pure study time for the finals. I must add, I do not regret this decision, as lately things with organization have been getting out of hand. While studying for my upcoming Psychology final, which has just so many theories and hypotheses, I decided to go for making flashcards (these have some great advantages!) To make things a bit different this time, though, I put the definitions in my own words and added some comments relating to my life experiences, movies I’ve seen or songs I’ve heard. For example, one flashcard that came out looked like this: From this experience, I realized that there are several things I need to do to make my flashcard-making time worth…my time. We are always busy. Homework, work, friends, appointments, cleaning, more work. This quarter I’ve worked out a way to keep myself a little less stressed than usual, and I think this could be helpful to many students. It involves two things: good time management and working ahead.

MEDITATION: it can help you relax, improve concentration and even your mood! Doesn’t take too long and can be done at any time/place. -Last time I was waiting for a ride on a bus stop for just about 5 minutes, and took that time to relax 🙂 I was so calm afterwards! Everyone can do it differently, but the key is to relax and try not to think of anything. 1) Take a comfortable position and put on some gentle, calming music 2) Close your eyes, straighten up. You can lean against a wall. 3) Let your thoughts come and go. If something starts to bother you, think “I can totally do it later, it can wait.” 4) Only 5-10 minutes a day is all it takes! Power Naps are a great way to boost your energy in the middle of the day! If you are feeling drowsy and tired and still have a ton of homework to do, take a 20-30 minute power nap! It doesn’t take too much time and helps increase productivity. 1. They are most effective if they last 15-20 minutes; 2. They are good of alertness and motor performance 3. BETTER than caffeine. Caffeine just postpones your fatigue, while power naps actually get rid of it. Best time of day to take a nap: 1-3 p.m. If taken after 4 p.m., you may disturb your sleep at night. HOW TO STUDY FOR MATH. The KEY: 1) Understand all the concepts before you go on any further 2) Do practice problems to secure that understanding — Follow along as your teacher explains a concept and try to understand it in class. If you have any questions, ask right away or after class so you don’t get behind. In math most concepts are built upon each other, so missing something early on might cause some trouble later! — At home, do practice problems (on that same day) to help everything sink in. With no review, you could forget what you’ve already understood and it may be difficult to recall later on.
